Why does beauty matter?

Lately I have been challenged to confront the importance of beauty. After some thought I came to the conclusion that beauty in all its subjectivity is perhaps one of the most important aspects of human existence. Why get out of bed in the morning if not for beauty (whatever that means to each individual)? With every picture I have ever posted on this site I have been trying to tell a story. That story is one of natural beauty and hope, for a planet that is in ecological chaos. John Keats once said,”What the imagination seizes as beauty must be truth.” There perhaps is no better way to describe the intrinsic value of beauty than the idea that it can tell us something about ourselves and the world we live in. It is my hope that everyone enjoys a little bit of beauty everyday. That is what I hope this blog can provide, a respite from the ugliness of the world and an important dose of natural beauty and wonder.

Book Reviews

Texts with environmental themes are so important to changing hearts and minds about current ecological issues. Therefore, I want people to understand what makes these texts great both in regards to their literary merit and environmental ideals. As a result, I will be reviewing (a term I am using rather loosely) one famous or interesting environmental themed text each week or so (as my schedule permits) to showcase the power and beauty of these texts when read through an environmentalist lens. For the first week the options I am giving you all are A River Runs Through it by Norman Maclean and Walden by Henry David Thoreau. The polls are up on Twitter and Instagram, please vote for your favorite or whichever one you would benefit more from me unpacking!
